He is a great teacher. The reading materials are related and very interesting to read. He barely has assignments, and if you can remember the major context of the reading materials you can easily get an A.

Dr. Patrick Moore is one of my favourite professors at UBC. He tells the most fascinating and well-thought-out stories related to the class content we are learning. He is sweet and caring and always ready to help a student out. He is honestly one of the most sweet and wholesome profs you can get at UBC. If you can take a class with Pat, do it!

Lecture is just going over the reading and he loves participation. Super nice and accessible. There are weekly two-sentence summaries on one of the weekly readings, which was helpful but tedious. Attendance 10%; citation assignment 5%; weekly summaries 10%; midterm 25%; research paper 25%; final 25%. Exams based on readings, so do the reading.

His class was truly amazing, and by far one of my favorite classes at UBC. There were many long readings, but they were very interesting and fun to read. Mr. Moore is very caring and considering, he genuinely shows concern in student's learning and tries to help everyone.

he speaks so quietly I have zero idea what he is saying the whole class. Readings are about 20-30 pages long each and there are 2 assigned per class. I have absolutely no clue what is going on

The course was alright but I didn't find Pat's approach to teaching that great, particularly in regard to the phonemics unit. Oftentimes, he would introduce a term or concept but then completely skip over the fundamentals and just dive into sample questions without having fully explained the core concept. Be prepared to study on your own a lot.

I understand the comments about him being boring, but I truly think you can learn a lot from him if you actively engage in his classes. He is so caring, incredibly knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches, and has a really unique perspective that you can't get from most profs. Generous marker, wonderful storyteller, and overall great guy.

A great prof who really loves what he is doing. Brought lots of interesting stories to class and it was a great experience to be taught by someone who is both deeply passionate and highly knowledgeable about the content. Such a sweet and caring prof!

Overall, good class. However, you get most of it out of the readings and not necessarily from class. Those sample questions he gives during lectures are usually on the exam itself so thats the only good thing about attending lecture. Other than that, pretty useless. Also, all marking is done by the TA which was horrible.

High reading load, but if you attend class you're golden. Lecture is just discussing the readings, don't skip them because if you internalize what you discuss the midterm/final are going to be a breeze. Prof himself is a lot of fun, has a good sense of humour and enjoys what he does.

I was severely disappointed by this class. I found it to be a waste of time and what we were "taught" was not interesting and made no sense. Dr. Moore did not seem to have a clear view of what he was trying to teach and we spent the majority of time sitting through vine videos. An all around awkward class. I would not take Dr. Moore again

Nice prof and wants you to succeed. Provides sample questions at every lecture, and often takes these exact questions for his exams, and gives short assignments every week. Lectures can be a little irrelevant because he likes to answer off-topic student questions about the readings and show a lot of weird youtube videos, but overall good course.

Dr. Moore is a sweet, sweet man, but they do not translate into his abilities as a teacher. His classes are boring & often off topic. I even went to office hours but he was still just monotone, awkward, & no help. I thought it was just the subject material that I was uninterested in, but we had a guest lecturer who was fantastic & engaging.

Unfortunately, a class on ethnographies of the circumpolar north turned into the ethnography of Patrick Moore. Huge amount of assigned readings but tbh, that's where you're going to learn from. Class was waste of time unless it was student presentations (where actual analyses occurred), and attendance mandatory. I won't take one Moore class of his.

Prof. Moore is one of the sweetest professors I've ever had here at UBC. He is understanding, enthusiastic, and nice. You can tell he is very knowledgable about his subject and genuinely enjoys discussing linguistic issues with students. Incredibly easy to approach and not difficult to keep up with, I would def recommend this class to anyone.

Love Professor Moore! He encourages discussion, great stories, super nice and always willing to help you if you're struggling. Yes, some of the readings are challenging but you learn a lot. Probably one of the best professors I have ever had at UBC.
